January 30th - April 4thSeason for Non-Violence 64 Days of Practice

“You must be the change you want to see in the world”
– Mahatma Gandhi

There are people everywhere who want to help create a better world – people deeply concerned about widespread suffering, environmental destruction, escalating materialism and the loss of our sense of community. There is a deep and growing hunger for a wiser and more loving society. Ghandhi and King modeled the vision to create such a society. They claimed the power for social change lies within individual consciousness. That if we really want to create a wise and loving world, we must first become wise and loving ourselves. With a vision of a society governed by love and the common good -- we have a powerful antidote to the violence, distrust and division of today’s politics of fear. In practicing the relational principles of Nonviolence we seek to recover and renew ourselves, our families and our politics - so violence and secrecy no longer shape our behavior. We realize that our lives, and those of our children, depend on our evolution. Learning to be non-violent is a new way of living – requiring a healing process that begins with the individual and ripples out into the larger world. As we heal our own relations we are demonstrating that people, organizations and governments can move the world pro-actively toward peace and wisdom. Join us in exploring and building this new future.

We will recognize this time with a series of daily e-mail's to those who wish to participate.

Sunday  March 14th  2:00 p.m.
Golden Rule Workshop

As part of the Season of Non-Violence, Interfaith Forum joins with Unity Church to sponsor this workshop being presented by IF Board members Rev. Donna Stroud, Chaplain at St. Francis Hospital Downtown, and Jenifer McDermott.

Throughout the world, more and more regions are becoming multicultural and multifaith. This trend is having profound effects on everything from politics and schools to businesses, social interactions and even families. Growing numbers of people are discovering that daily life cannot be conducted from the perspective of a single religious culture. Educators are also realizing that ethics cannot be taught from the standpoint of just one faith.

Increasing diversity can be unsettling and even provoke animosity, but it also gives individuals and communities opportunities to strive for greater understanding and appreciation of all its members. One path to this appreciation lies, perhaps unexpectedly, in the realm of religion.

Although the world contains dozens of religions that are broken into thousands of sects, it is remarkable to realize that virtually all of them share a similar moral precept: One should treat others the way she/he would like to be treated. So profound are the implications of this tenet that it has come, over the past few centuries, to be known as the single rule that is as valuable spiritually as gold is materially.

Using Scripture from thirteen faiths, the Golden Rule Workshop focuses on the common ground that is shared by billions of people. Its goal is to give each person a practical way to cut through misconceptions and begin creating positive interaction across what might otherwise seem impenetrable religious, racial, social and ethnic divisions.

This workshop is offered for a love offering and is part of our observance of a Season for Non-Violence

"Peace One Day"

At the Womad music festival, Jeremy Gilley conceived of the idea for one day when all countries vowed not to wage war; a worldwide ceasefire, a non-violence day. In 1998, Jeremy began meeting with students, peace negotiators, NGOs, government representatives, heads of state, and United Nations officials.

After years of persistence and hard work, Jeremy's dream came true. On 7 September 2001, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution, sponsored by the UK and Costa Rica formally establishing an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International Day of Peace - Peace Day - fixed in the global calendar on 21 September.
